Texas rental assistance (rent relief programs)

The Texas Rent Relief Program

This website allows both landlords and tenants to register and submit an application. If you need help filling out an application, you can reach one of our customer service professionals at 1-833-9TX-RENT (1-833-989-7368).

Beginning March 13, 2020, the Texas Rent Relief Program may assist tenants with the following charges. (This means you can ask for help with up to 11 months’ worth of past-due bills):

  • Past due, current, and up to 2 months of expected rent costs
  • Past due, current, and up to 2 months of expected utility and home energy expenses
  • After the initial 3 months of current/future assistance, you can apply for 3 additional months of assistance if funds are still available

Landlord Application

For landlords seeking compensation on behalf of tenants for past-due or future rent:

All payments must be made in order for the tenant’s rental responsibilities to be met.
The renter must sign the application.

How can I apply?

  • Choose the units and families that you believe are eligible.
Inform tenants who have linguistic difficulties or impairments about the program.
  • Ascertain that the homes you’ve chosen meet the eligibility standards listed below, and assist them in gathering the required papers.

Tenant Application

Households seeking immediate payment of past-due rent or utilities:

You can apply to the program director and invite your landlord to participate.
Your landlord will be asked to set up an account and enter information.
If your landlord declines to participate, you may still apply.

What you’ll need

  • Gather all of the required documentation.
Notify your landlord of your intention to apply; they must also sign off on the application.

    .

No Access to the Online Application?

Tenants who are unable to access the online application may register for a tenant account by calling the call center. As part of this process, documentation will be accepted via postal mail at the following address.

Payments

Unless otherwise agreed, all payments are made directly to the landlord or utility company. A seven-day outreach to the landlord and/or utility provider to confirm their rejection will be issued to the tenant if they refuse.

Evictions

A portion of the money will go to tenants whose landlords have already filed an eviction complaint in their local court. For the sake of expediency and the avoidance of evictions, applications received under this set-aside shall be considered first.
