Wages, business income, Social Security, retirement, unemployment, disability, tips, commissions, and more. - How long can I receive help?
Up to 12 months of past-due rent and 3 months of future rent. Total help cannot exceed 18 months. - Is there a maximum benefit?
There’s no dollar cap, but funding is based on need and availability. Priority may go to those hit hardest. - Can I track my application?
Yes. You’ll get emails when you create your account, submit your app, receive a decision, and when funds are distributed. - How will I be notified?
Via email only. Make sure your email address is correct. - Who receives the payments?
Payments go directly to landlords or utility providers. If your landlord won’t participate, funds may go to you. - Do I have to repay anything?
No. This is a grant, not a loan—as long as you meet the program’s terms. - Do I have to be a U.S. citizen?
No. STAY DC is open to all renters in the District, regardless of citizenship. - What if I’m already getting rent help?
You can still apply—as long as you’re not covering the same costs twice. - What if I’m not behind but worried I soon will be?
You may qualify for future rent assistance based on income and risk. - I pay rent for someone else. Can I apply?
Yes, but only if your name is on the lease or you’re responsible for a portion of the rent. - Are the payments taxed?
Not for tenants. Landlords may need to report payments as income. More info at IRS.gov. - How can a landlord check a tenant’s STAY DC status?
Email [email protected] or [email protected] with the subject line “Inquiry into the status of the pre-eviction application.” Include the tenant’s name and address.
